Capsule Geology

The Dako occurrence is located on the southeastern slopes of Haskin Mountain, north of McDame Creek and approximately 4.5 kilometres south of Poorman Lake.

Regionally, the area is underlain by quartzite and quartz arenite sedimentary rocks of the Boya Formation and limestone, marble and calcareous sedimentary rocks of the Rosella Formation, both of the Lower Cambrian Atan Group, and limestone, slate, siltstone and argillite of the Cambrian to Ordovician Kechika Group. The sedimentary units have been intruded by granites of the Eocene Mount Reed stock.

Locally, an epidote skarn zone occurs at the upper contact of hornfels and hosts strong disseminated pyrrhotite/magnetite. A lower contact with limestone carries sphalerite and galena. Elsewhere banded limestone locally hosts chalcopyrite and pyrite. Skarn with tremolite, actinolite and epidote hosts chalcopyrite along fractures and as weak disseminations. Sphalerite occurs along stylolites. Brecciated skarn at one contact with limestone carries disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Brecciated limestone hosts disseminated sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite throughout.

In 1949, a sample taken from the “Lower Adit” zone, which is believed to be the same as the Dako occurrence, yielded 4.69 per cent zinc and 81.9 grams per tonne silver over 2.7 metres (Assessment Report 00048).

In 1994, four samples of mineralized skarn material yielded values of up to 0.22 per cent copper, 9.70 per cent zinc, 19.7 grams per tonne silver and 0.40 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 23583).

In 1996, a 1.5-metre chip sample from the approximate centre of the mineralized outcrop yielded 0.60 per cent lead, 4.84 per cent zinc, 0.04 per cent tungsten and 137.3 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 24667).

In 1997, a 1-metre sample with sphalerite and galena graded 1.3 per cent zinc (Sample 78016, Assessment Report 25253). Most samples graded significantly less. Silver values were as high as 6 grams per tonne and in general, elevated. Gold values were not anomalous. In general, copper values were not anomalous, 2 of the 21 core samples being 356 and 142 parts per million, whereas the remainder of the samples were below 63 parts per million (Assessment Report 25253).

Also at this time, a 2-metre chip sample (149900) across a zone of massive sulphides in skarn, located approximately 350 metres south-southeast and downslope of the Dako occurrence, assayed 0.18 per cent copper, 4.96 per cent zinc and 5.6 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 25254).

Work History

The area was first staked in part by Yukon Ranges Prospecting Syndicate in the spring of 1948 and the following year a program of geological mapping, sampling and trenching was performed. The property had been staked originally approximately 40 years before this and was the centre of a promotion that collapsed with the death of the promoter, Haskins.

In 1969, Brettland Mines Ltd. completed a 165.0 line-kilometre airborne magnetic survey on the area as part of the Krain Option property.

A map published in 1977 by C.J. Hodgson shows an old adit and old trench of unknown age (as reported in Carpenter and Gilmour [2008]). These might relate to the “Lower Adit” and “Lower Adit” zone reported in Assessment Report 00048.

In 1994, the area was prospected and sampled by Daniel W. Brett and the Debby claims. In 1996, Daniel W. Brett completed a program of geological mapping and rock sampling on the area as the Reed property.

In 1997, Demand Gold Ltd. completed a program of geochemical (rock and soil) sampling and a 14.0 line-kilometre ground magnetic survey on the Haskin Reed property. The magnetometer survey located an extremely anomalous zone 150 metres from the exposed outcrop. Further investigation led to the discovery of subcrop of skarn-hosted massive sulphide. Two holes, totalling 197 metres, were drilled. The results of drilling indicate that the massive sulphide outcrop thins drastically at depth.

In 2008, Pacific Bay Minerals Ltd. completed a 917.0 line-kilometre airborne magnetic and electromagnetic survey on the area as the Haskin-Reed property. The following year, a program of geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling and trenching was completed on the property.
